Jameel and family
Jameel, along with his family of 13 people, was forced to flee their cherished home in Gaza City as it was reduced to rubble. They found refuge in a cramped two-room flat in Rafah, sharing the limited space with the entire family. Faced with the beginning of the military operation in Rafah, they were forced to resettle again. They headed to the city of Deir al Balah in central Gaza where they have been sheltering in a tent until now. They hope to return to the north soon.
"Our hearts were further broken when we lost our beloved father, Said. He passed away in a hospital in the southern Gaza Strip while we were escaping, which too fell victim to the war, due to a dire lack of essential medications. Our family's livelihood, a thriving shoemaking business, was also claimed by the chaos of war."
The conditions they now find themselves in are extremely difficult. With no access to water, electricity, with difficult access to food and internet, their daily life is a constant struggle for survival. The mental state of the entire family is very alarming. Jameel's brother has Down syndrome. Jameel has a wife and two children (Osama and Jowana). On Osama's recent third birthday Jameel said: 'I am working hard to make him happy and to compensate him for the childhood that was stolen from him."
